The sun gives us life. We love to engage in active sports, experience nature, and watch the joy on children’s faces as they play in the great outdoors. Unfortunately, these enjoyable activities can cause sun damage, spots, freckles, solar lentigenes and other harmful effects that, over time, become unsightly and make you look tired and old. Part of a modern woman’s beauty regimen and men looking for a competitive advantage should include some way to restore the clean, clear, youthful look of skin without sun damage and pigmented spots. The IPL Photofacial Edgewater and Hoboken residents are utilizing at Edgewater and Hoboken Cosmetic & Laser Centers provides just that.
What is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?
Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, is a fascinating and effective new way to restore the skin’s youthful glow. It fights fine lines, minor wrinkles, redness, sun spots, large pores, spider veins, acne blemishes and rosacea. It eliminates redness, freckles and larger brown spots without causing any harm to the surface of the skin itself. Known as a non-ablative technique, IPL delivers high intensity pulses of a broadband spectrum of light quite different from that of a laser. These customized, gentle pulses of light are applied to each square centimeter of the skin being treated and directly affect the deeper parts of the skin, known as the dermis, targeting the sun damaged areas, and leaves the epidermis unaffected. The effect is a marvelous transformation from red, sun-damaged, spotted, or freckled skin to clear, smooth, unmarked skin and shrunken pore size that looks and feels great with a nice lift.
How does IPL work?
Utilizing krypton and xenon gas technologies, Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr. T.G. Khan utilizes the safest, most powerful IPL systems available on the market today with the Novalis Medical IPL and Focus Medical IPL devices. IPL treatments are performed with different types of wavelengths, each of which is designed to target different structures in the skin. For instance, Novalis Medical VR and Focus Medical VR (Vascular Reduction) aim its effects at vascular lesions like spider veins and vascular birthmarks, whereas Novalis Medical SR and Focus Medical SR (Skin Rejuvenation) focuses on pigmented areas such as age spots and solar lentigenes. A third type, Novalis Medical HR and Focus Medical HR (Hair Reduction), actually targets hair follicles and is utilized for hair removal purposes with great results. AR, or Acne Reduction, is used to target and kill bacteria in the pores of the skin and leave your skin smooth and acne-free. An overall benefit of each and every one of these different types of IPL is what doctors call the “thermal effect.- This means that new collagen is produced by skin exposed to IPL, typically leading to a gradual improvement in the appearance of wrinkles, pigmentation, spider vessels, and acne with an overall tightening of the skin.
One of the wonders of IPL is the fact that after a treatment, which usually lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, patients enjoy the opportunity to resume their daily activities without any recovery time. Unlike dermabrasion and laser resurfacing, IPL will not damage the surface of the skin. If there is any pain associated with the procedure, it is typically minimal, and the procedure requires no anesthesia. Depending upon your degree of sun damage and photoaging, you will require three treatments scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart with conscious minimization of sun exposure. As with any treatment, the long lasting effects will depend upon proper daily skin care, also available in our centers.
